Playing it Saif

By: Shams Irfan

If Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ would not have happened at the right time, ‘struggling’ actor Saif Ali Khan’s film career might have been over for long.

It [Dil Chahta Hai] worked as elixir for Saif’s aging film career and made him a star that he is today. His near perfect comic-timing and no-nonsense acting in DCH took everyone by surprise and saved Saif from being history.

Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan

But it was his on-screen chemistry with King Khan [Shahrukh] in Karan Johar’s ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ that finally ensured Saif’s smooth stay in the showbiz.

Since then Saif continued to surprise critics and fans with his improvising skill as an actor and makeover as a heart-throb of gen-x.

He’s a lover, a guitarist, a style icon and of course a safe bet as an actor for Bollywood film industry.

With no need to prove himself as an actor [post Omkara], Saif is affording himself the luxury of experimenting with whatever new and exciting comes his way. Though the actor in him might be yearning for applause and appreciations all the time, from outside, he is visibly at ease…

Saif Aaj Kal

Though Saif’s last few movies (Tashan and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic) failed to make any impact at the box-office, the actor is surely not in the danger zone yet.

Instead his upcoming movies (Love Aaj Kal & Qurbaan) are already making headlines for all the right reasons. Saif no longer needs a carrier [big star] to ride him home. He can carry through a movie on his own as an actor/star and also ensure box-office returns.

Next Change

There is more than one reason to look forward to Saif – Deepika starrer ‘Love Aaj Kal’.

After successfully touching a million hearts with his effortlessly sweet love story ‘Jab We Met’, director Imtiya Ali is here to test his love-potion all over again.

What else can we ask for, Saif and Deepika, two young and happening stars of Bollywood teaming up for an out-and-out love story titled ‘Love Aaj Kal’,  after all its romance that sells in Bollywood.

The on-screen chemistry between Saif and Deepika is already keeping the tabloids busy and Kareena alert.

Neetu Chandra, Krishika Gupta – Fire and Ice

Bollywood hottie Neetu Chandra (of ‘Oye Lucky Oye’ fame), and a new-bee called Krishika Gupta (model by profession) decided to step across the firing lines of glam world in a recent photo shoot.

One look at the pics and you know the duo yearn for controversy and some eyeballs too!!!

It sure has to land into trouble as sex-kitten Neetu Chandra takes Krishika Gupta for a ride on the beach, creating ripples in the stillness of ocean!!!

Girl on girl or lesbianism; whatever you like to call it, always limps under the stong burden of taboo in Indian cinema. One cannot cross over at will and come back unscathed. Even the likes of Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das has to face heat before heating the silever screen.

But the new generation of Bollywood is more open to experimentation as there is urgence to succeed.

So shut up and enjoy the show!!!

Even the dead can feel the heat of the skin....!

A move and the eyes will start rolling...No Neetu!

“Slumdog is trashy” – Priyadarshan

Genius Boyle!!!

Genius Boyle!!!

By: Shams Irfan

Bollywood filmmaker Priyadarshan is upset with Indian public for giving too much importance to Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire”, Reason: movie is a complete trash according to him.

His recent outburst against “Slumdog Millionaire” came at a time when his fellow countrymen are busy celebrating the success of Indians associated with the movie. Be it assistant director Loveleen Tondon, music director A.R.Rahman or actor Anil Kapoor and Irfaan Khan, “Slumdog…” features as many Indians as any other Bollywood movie.

Than what made Priyadarshan say that “Slumdog Millionaire is nothing but a cheap trashy mediocre version of those commercial films about estranged brothers and childhood sweethearts that Salim-Javed used to write so brilliantly in the 1970s. And please quote me clearly on this. If the Golden Globe and Oscars committees have chosen to honour this trashy film it just shows their ignorance of world cinema.”

Is it copy-cat director’s frustration or prejudice towards Hollywood cinema, we don’t know for sure; but we all know how good is Mr. Priyadarshan’s knowledge of cinema!!! His filmmaking career says it all… Priyadarshan career is full of plagiarism or inspirations from Hollywood, films like “Thalavattam” or Kyun ki in Hindi [starring Salman Khan and Kareena] was a poor imitation of Oscar winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest; Malamaal Weekly [Waking Ned Devine], Garam Masala [Boeing Boeing], And the list goes on….

Even the best of his movies are lifted straight away from Hollywood, Telegu or Tamil cinema, that too without acknowledging the original director or film.

So why such a loose talk about fellow country men getting recognition, what if the director is a British filmmaker and not somebody from India, or someone ‘genius’ like Priyadarshan himself.

Or may be it’s because of the fact that Priyadarshan’s only original creation till date Kanjeevaram, which was screened alongside “Slumdog Millionaire” in Toronto Film Festival, failed to get the desired reaction because of Danny’s mighty presence.

Is Priyadarshan trying to flatter Amitabh Bachchan who shared somewhat similar thought on his personalized blog recently [which he later retracted]!!! Whatever be the case, Priyadarshan’s vision is as confined as his creative knowledge!!!

Please leave your comments below and let us know what you think about Priyadarshan’s remarks.

Bollywood's New Queen – Katrina

No Blues!!!

No Blues!!!

By: Shams Irfan

If you were asked to pick the most successful, good-looking, handsomely paid actress of the year who has made it big in the Bollywood, then almost instantly you will scream Kat from top of your voice. Am I assuming too much? Not exactly, Katrina Kaif is undoubtedly the most success actress who has made it safely into 2009. About others, I have to be too lenient to let them pass without any ifs and buts!!!

But for beautiful Katrina, the year 2008 proved to be lucky in more than one ways: she didn’t have even a single flop, what? Yeah I know ‘Hello’ and ‘Yuvvraaj’ were big let downs…but still I prefer to pardon Katrina for being generous towards her boyfriend Sallu.

Cool Kat...

Cool Kat...

Katrina Kaif closed year 2007 with ‘Partner’ where she kept funny-bone Govinda on his toes most of the time while real life partner Salman Khan was trying his luck with gorgeous Lara Dutta; Kat ‘Welcome-d’ 2008 with ‘Race’ staring alongside sexy rival Bipasha Basu .

The movie was a box office hit while its songs became discothèques and party fodders throughout the year (zara zara kiss me kiss me…), and Katrina once again managed to pull it off in style despite Saif and Bipasha’s engaging onscreen chemistry…kissing success!!!

Zara...Zara...Kiss Me

Zara...Zara...Kiss Me

Then came along Katrina’s lucky mascot Akshay Kumar and the movie was Anees Bazmi’s ‘Singh is Kinng’. Akshay-Katrina pairing proved success once again and sellable too…‘Singh is Kinng’ became year’s biggest blockbuster shattering all previous records.

Once again Katrina managed to get noticed [big time] despite Khiladi Akshay’s towering presence in the movie – Kat crisscrossed our hearts with superb dancing numbers like “jee karda bai…jee karda…”

Golden Girl - Kat

Golden Girl - Kat

But the most awaited moment of Katrina’s life came towards the end of year [not talking about ‘Yuvvraaj’, I know it was a dud], the moment was something that beautiful Katrina might have been wishing for years [in secrecy] …. Katrina replaced former beauty queen Aishwariya Rai as the brand ambassador of Nakshatra Jewelry. Since then I have been trying to find out how boyfriend Salman Khan felt…after all Ash’s loss is Sallu’s gain!!!

Now with films like ‘New York’ with John Abraham and ‘Ajeb Prem Ki Gazab Kahani’ with Ranbir Kapoor ready for release this year; queen of Bollywood Katrina Kaif is perfectly settled in her shoes…and yeah her love life with boyfriend Sallu is going steady!!!

Five Disasters of 2008

Down and Dejected

Down and Dejected

By: Shams Irfan

The year 2008 will end on a relatively low note for Bollywood as there has been no sufficient number of hits this year to set the mood for celebrations. Most of the films with strong star cast and big budgets failed to make an impression at the box-office window; even the hefty amount spent on publicity was hard to recover in some cases. Starting with Yash Chopra’s multi-starrer, multi-crore ‘Tashan’, ‘2008’ showed the signs of a year that would be hard to forget, both for producers and audiences.

Nothing managed to pull audiences to theaters except a few small banner hits that kept the hope floating throughout the year.

Here at octanentertainment.com, we have listed down five disasters of the year that let cinema lovers down; despite boosting on their stars-studded cast, extensive publicity, big-budget and even bigger banners, they got trashed.

It was hell of a task to handpick the worst five of the season as the list was really long!!!

Bumpy Ride

Bumpy Ride

Drona

The Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra starrer sci-fi packed [comic] drama failed to click with the audiences. Director Goldie Behl and actor Abhishek Bachchan’s childhood dream of making a super-hero movie with swords and gizmos juxtaposed got full hands down from the critics. The movie was pulled down from the multiplexes within a week’s time. Even the mighty presence of Jr. Bachchan could not save friend Goldie Behl from getting trashed by the critics. Thus Drona is now remembered for being ‘illegitimate’ brain-child of AB’s Baby and buddie Behl. But director Behl is not the one to say ‘I quit’ so easily- nothing can stop him from making his dreams come true. Behl’s last film ‘Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai’ is finally dwarfed with Drona taking its place as biggest flop.

And finally the shocker: Goldie Behl unashamedly declared Drona sequel and vowed to torture us again with his [dream] nightmares.

Blame Game!!!

Blame Game!!!

Karzzz

After watching Himesh Reshamiya in ‘Aap Ka Saroor’, we all thought that possibly enough this is the end of it. Not again this man with fake hair and torturous nasal voice would be seen on screen, at least after making a dud like ‘Aap….Suroor’. But he came back from the dead, just like the protagonist of Subhash Ghai’s super-hit reincarnation drama ‘Karz’ (1980), and tormented us with songs like ‘lut jaun…lut jaun’, for a while. Well as I already said, this was the year of duds; even the prisoners of Guantanamo Bay would not have tolerated Himesh’s acting skills and ‘melodious’ voice. Now the biggest shock: Himesh is ready to deliver another Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD), ‘Kajraare’…help us please…enough is enough!!!!

Angry Dud Men

Angry Dud Men

Tashan

The year 2008 started with Yash Chopra’s ‘Tashan’ starring Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor. The hopes were high as everything was perfect: cast, banner, publicity and even the songs managed to rule the charts for most of the year. Yash Chopra banners love for new filmmakers proved costly as writer turned director Vijay Krishna Acharya failed to justify even a single actor’s presence in this multi-starrer extravaganza. ‘Tashan’ had no tashan to boast of, even the love-birds Saif-Kareena failed to save this kitschy blunder.

What a Waste!!!

What a Waste!!!

Yuvvraaj

Imagine coming together of: dream-merchant Subhash Ghai, original muscles-man of Bollywood Salman Khan, new reigning queen of silver screen Katrina Kaif, the mustache man Anil Kapoor, the lady killer Zayed Khan- and a flop called ‘Yuvvraaj’. The film went down with lot more than what we expected- Subhash Ghai’s reputation as an good director, a big question on Salman Katrina’s onscreen-off screen chemistry, a complete waste of talent called Anil Kapoor, though he played his role with sincerity [but there was nothing much to do] and a good-for-nothing-good-face called Zayed Khan. Aah…too many heartbreakers…how could one expect it to be a hit…when failure was written all-over it with director Ghai’s ageing blood.

So this one dived down without a trace, though Salman Khan tried his best to save Yuvvraaj with everything he had, Sallu got the film re-edited, went out for the first time to promote any of his movies!!! But ‘Yuvvraaj’ sunk like bulky titanic and so did over-weight Sallu’s crowd pulling magic wand!!!

Flop Story!!

Flop Story!!

Love Story 2050

Once there was a director who thought of making a sci-fic movie with one of the most successful actress of the era and an actor who happened to be his son. Isn’t the story interesting? Well this story is called ‘Love Story 2050’ and you are smart enough to guess the rest. Let’s start it allover again. Once upon a time there was a Director named Harry Baweja, who by some miracle happened to be a director and by another miracle had a son [Harman Baweja] who was not so ugly. And they made a movie with son-ny’s lady love [Priyanka Chopra] where son-dad-daughter-in-law all had a role to play. And they thought that by yet-another miracle they will get away with this one too…but this time they were wrong and son-ny Jr. Baweja could not make his father proud. ‘Love Story 2050’ found itself a place among worst movies ever.

What Happened to Munna Bhai Chale Amerika?

Munna Bhai Chale Amerika

Munna Bhai Chale Amerika

I was wondering what happened to Munna Bhai Chale Amerika? After making a place in our hearts with Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, everybody was hoping and then waiting for director Raj Kumar Hirani to tune his comic strings once again and treat us with another comic-caper starring lovable don Munna Bhai and his loyal accomplice in crime Circuit.

But, sorry guys, there seems to be no visible progress as far as Munna Bhai Chale Amerika is concerned, all we found is this video and a poster. So enjoy till we get something else!!!

Already had enough of SRK? Think again, here is something that will make you change your mind!!! The King of Bollywood SRK is back to his usual-self – promoting his new movie ‘Billu Barber’ slowly but steadily. And this time around SRK is romancing the size-zero queen of Bollywood Kareena, after a wait of seven long years; last time they were seen romancing each other in Asoka (2001).

According to King Khan, Billu Barber has him for a very limited screen time; the film is actually about Irfaan Khan who is playing the title role of Billu Barber.

Is Saif Safe?

Is Saif Safe?

But SRK’s mighty presence, no-matter how brief will surely make a big difference when it comes to pull audiences to the theaters. Being the crowd puller that he is, SRK will have three top-notch Bollywood actresses, Kareena, Priyanka and Deepika shaking legs with him in an item number.

The film is about SRK’s friendship with a small village barber called Billu (played by Irfaan Khan), Billu Barber is made under SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

Ghajini – Preview

By: Shams Irfan

Ghajini is once in a long time kind of experience which comes out of the otherwise full of cliché Bollywood cinema. With perfection written all over it, Aamir Khan marks his entry or re-entry into the competitive [in Aamir’s case non-competitive] world of Bollywood.

Good news is: Ghajini stands firm against all the hype and speculations created by its pre-release marketing, thanks to the mighty presence of Aamir and no nonsense performance from Southern sensation Asin; Ghajini will end-up redefining genres, if not creating one.

Ghajini clearly belongs to Aamir, so initial hype and expectations are justified – we expect Aamir to act-his-heart-out every single time he faces camera, and this time he is unfailingly at his best.

Like a wounded lion, with an ever failing memory Aamir is eager to avenge his lady loves death.

Celebrate this Christmas with Ghajini as Aamir’s performance is sure to leave you spellbound long after you are out of the theatre. And take my word for it, 2 hour 59 minute length is not something you will complain about – Aamir will leave you wanting for more.

Ghajini is releasing on 24th of December [evening show on wards]
